International Conference on Cold Winter Deserts

Virtual event, 02/12/2021 - 03/12/2021

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and Uzbekistan’s State Forestry Committee are organizing the International Conference on Cold Winter Deserts on 2–3 December 2021, within the framework of the Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) project.

To highlight the global importance of cold winter deserts, the International Conference will convene researchers and experts to present their papers on biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, ecosystem services, food security, and water use in temperate deserts of the region with the aim of facilitating a policy dialogue on these topics. Staff members of the Succow Foundation responsible for the project will also be present.

The cold winter deserts – also referred to as temperate – are nature regions featuring unique ecosystems and species, spreading from northern Iran across Central Asia to Mongolia. Despite their ecological importance, temperate deserts are, according to a study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, one of the least recognized biomes worldwide.
