Working Group on the World Heritage Nomination of the Eastern Mongolian Steppes decides on next steps

On June 13th 2023, the working group meeting for the World Heritage Nomination of the Eastern Mongolian Steppes took place at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia (MET) in Ulaanbaatar.

The working group was formally established by the Ministry in 2022 and consists of the representatives of the MET, local administrations and Protected Areas of Eastern Mongolia as well as the Mongolian Bird Conservation Center. The State Secretary for environment, Mr. S.Tsogtgerel, leads the working group. The meeting was attended by a German delegation consisting of representatives of the German Environment Agency (UBA), Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) as well as Michael Succow Foundation.

During the working group meeting important issues such as the shape of the proposed serial property, the buffer zone of the component parts as well as the integrated management of the property were discussed. It is intended to complete the nomination dossier for the Eastern Mongolian Steppes by the end of 2023 and submit it by January 2024.

The meeting was organised within the project “Towards the World Heritage Nomination of the Eastern Mongolian Steppes”.  It is funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry’s Advisory Assistance Programme (AAP) for environmental protection in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia and other countries neighboring the European Union. It is supervised by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the German Environment Agency (UBA).
