UNESCO MAB delegation also visits Armenia’s first planned biosphere reserve

A UNESCO delegation led by Antonio Abreu, Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences at UNESCO and Secretary of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and Hans Thulstrup, Head of the Section for MAB Networking, Biosphere Reserves and Capacity Building at UNESCO, visited our project region on 25 October 2026.

The visit took place during the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Armenia.

Together with the Armenian partner organisation Soluton and the Armenian Ministry of Environment, we are working to develop the country’s first biosphere reserve.

Representatives of the Michael Succow Foundation accompanied the high-level UNESCO delegation on an excursion to the planned biosphere reserve. Jan Peters, Managing Director of the Michael Succow Foundation, also took part.

The focus was on the development process for the UNESCO biosphere reserve. The delegation received first-hand information from the coordinating project partners about the current status, progress to date and upcoming challenges.

The programme took the delegation from Lake Sevan to Dilijan National Park. There, they also learned about a WWF project dedicated to the reintroduction of the Caucasian red deer into the wild.

The direct exchange on site provided an opportunity to reflect together on the progress made so far and discuss future perspectives.
