German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider Recognizes 35 Years of German-Caucasus Cooperation in Nature Conservation

On 26 October 2026, H.E. Claudia Busch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, hosted a reception on the occasion of German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider’s visit in connection with COP17 on biodiversity. The event brought together numerous representatives of German, Azerbaijani, Armenian and Georgian nature conservation organisations.

Jan Peters, Managing Director of the Michael Succow Foundation, took the opportunity to engage in a personal exchange with Minister Schneider on the Foundation’s long-standing conservation work in the Caucasus and the shared challenges of protecting biodiversity worldwide.

A special highlight of the evening was the recognition of 35 years of German-Caucasus cooperation in nature conservation. A specially produced film highlighted the longstanding contributions and commitment of GIZ, WWF, the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) and the Michael Succow Foundation to protecting the Caucasus region’s unique natural heritage and biodiversity.

In his address, German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider emphasised the shared global responsibility for preserving biodiversity.

The reception impressively demonstrated the importance of long-term partnerships, joint commitment and international solidarity in protecting biodiversity. The recognition of 35 years of German-Caucasus cooperation was also a tribute to the achievements to date and an encouragement to continue on this shared path in the future.
