In late April 2026, Berlin became a gathering place for everyone working toward a green and resilient future for Ukraine: The 4th Networking Workshop of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) brought together key stakeholders from politics, international organizations, and the field.
High-level representatives were also in attendance, including Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture, as well as Dr. Kathrin Blaufuss, Head of the IKI Program. Their remarks underscored how crucial close international cooperation is, especially now.
The workshop focused on the question: How can Ukraine move toward the EU while simultaneously advancing climate, biodiversity, and energy goals? Discussions included progress on national climate targets (NDCs), the biodiversity strategy (NBSAP), and innovative approaches to a decentralized and renewable energy supply.
In addition to policy input, the program offered ample opportunity for exchange and concrete collaboration. In interactive sessions, participants worked together to explore how climate protection and nature conservation can be systematically integrated into reconstruction plans—a crucial building block for the country’s sustainable development.
Even in the run-up to the event, IKI implementing organizations took the opportunity to network with one another, exchange experiences, and highlight their joint contributions.
The Michael Succow Foundation also played an active role, contributing its expertise particularly in the area of adaptation planning—specifically ecosystem-based adaptation—as well as in peatland and nature conservation. The workshop provided a valuable platform for strengthening partnerships, gaining new insights, and working together on solutions that are truly effective in addressing current challenges.
One thing became clear in Berlin: The reconstruction of Ukraine is not only an enormous task—but also a great opportunity to incorporate sustainable, climate-resilient development into the reconstruction of Ukraine from the very beginning.
