Renewed Five-Year Cooperation for Biodiversity Conservation in Central Asia

The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the Michael Succow Foundation (Germany) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the next 5 years. Following the signing by the Turkmen side, the original documents were forwarded to Germany, where the final signing by the Foundation's leadership took place today.

The cooperation between the Michael Succow Foundation and Turkmenistan has been successfully developing since 2007, aiming to preserve Central Asia's globally significant biodiversity.

Key Areas of Cooperation:

  • Protected Area Management: Scientific support and development of management plans for Turkmenistan's nature reserves
  • New UNESCO Nominations: Preparation of a new transboundary nomination, "Karsts, Canyons, and Caves of Koytendag" (jointly with Uzbekistan), following the successful inscription of the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan
  • Climate Adaptation: Increasing ecosystem resilience to climate change, attracting green investments, and developing ecotourism
  • Strengthening our capabilities within the framework of the IKI One Health project in improving regional habitat connectivity, research and the prevention of zoonotic diseases
  • Continuation of cross-border cooperation on nature conservation, for example, in the implementation of the Ustyurt Memorandum and other cross-border measures to protect migratory wildlife, jointly with the Convention on Mirgatory Species (CMS)
  • Continuation of our commitment to strengthening the management and effectiveness of existing UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan
