“Bring the Waters Home” by Grace Nono – A powerful outcome of the Climate Action Artist Residency

The Michael Succow Foundation, partner in the Greifswald Mire Centre, is pleased to share the release of “Bring the Waters Home”, a compelling new song and music video by Filipino artist and cultural researcher Grace Nono. The piece is the final result of her participation in the Climate Action Artist Residency, a programme implemented by Cultural Vistas and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), , which she completed with us.

During her time in Greifswald, Germany, Grace engaged with experts to explore the role of peatlands in climate protection. Peatlands are among the most effective carbon sinks on Earth, and their restoration is a vital tool for climate mitigation.

During her residency, Grace engaged deeply with the cultural and ecological dimensions of peatland conservation — an often-overlooked climate solution with immense potential. Through field visits, expert exchanges, and artistic reflection, she explored how indigenous knowledge systems and ancestral relationships to land and water offer powerful guidance for contemporary climate challenges.

The resulting work, “Bring the Waters Home,” is both a musical and visual journey. It honors the spiritual and ecological importance of wetlands while calling for their protection in the face of climate change. Blending ancestral chants, traditional instrumentation, and cinematic imagery, the piece amplifies the voices of communities who have long cared for these ecosystems.

The project exemplifies the growing field of climate activism, where creative expression becomes a force for environmental awareness and justice.
