Succow Foundation meets Uzbek Environmental Committee after UNESCO recognition of the Lower Amudarya Biosphere Reserve

Discussions on cooperation in the designation of the Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve and plans for future joint cooperation

At the end of September, the Uzbek Environmental Committee met with representatives of the Michael Succow Foundation. First of all, the importance of the inclusion of the Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves within the framework of the Man and the Biosphere (MaB) programme was acknowledged.

Since 16 September 2021, the floodplain forest ecosystem in the lower reaches of the Amudarya River in Uzbekistan's Karakalpak officially belongs to the World Network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. Thus good conditions have been created for a better compatibility of nature conservation and use. With the current recognition, the international community acknowledges the efforts of the Uzbek government in this region, which is facing diverse ecological challenges, also due to climate change.

The main task of the biosphere reserve is to preserve and restore the landscapes, animal and plant species of the Tugai, including rare and endangered species.

The agenda also included further planning for the joint World Heritage nomination "Cold Winter Deserts of Turan" and emerging needs following the designation of the South Tugai National Park.
