Successful exchange on World Heritage nomination of Eastern Mongolian steppes

Between 26th and 30th of January an Expert Workshop of the project “Towards the World Heritage nomination of the Eastern Mongolian Steppes” was conducted on the Island of Vilm in Germany.

The meeting brought together 17 participants from Mongolia and Germany representing various organizations such as the Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the Michael Succow Foundation and others. The Mongolian delegation was led by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mr. Battulga Erkhembayar.

The main goal of the workshop was to discuss and agree on the most important aspects of the World Heritage (WH) nomination of the Eastern Mongolian Steppes as well as to discuss the perspectives and opportunities for the WH nomination of the Desert Landscapes of the Mongolian Southern Gobi.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia Mr. Battulga Erkhembayar expressed his gratitude towards German partners for accompanying the WH nomination processes in Mongolia and reaffirmed his readiness to further collaborate and support this process.

The workshop was followed by an excursion to the Jasmund National Park, guided by Prof. Hans D. Knapp and ended with a joint lunch together with Prof. Michael Succow in Greifswald.
