As part of the project, Wendelin Wichtmann (MSF) and Olga Denyshchyk (MSF) have examined the feasibility of paludiculture under the specific conditions found in the Northern Ukraine. The result is a comprehensive compendium, now available not only in Ukrainian but also in English. This significantly broadens access to this valuable expertise—an important step toward making knowledge about paludiculture accessible on an international scale.
The project, titled “Promoting Sustainable Livestock Management and Ecosystem Conservation in Northern Ukraine”, which is being implemented with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the FOLUR Platform. Its goal is ambitious: to transition the agricultural use of peatlands to sustainable, ecological management. This approach not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also improves soil fertility and protects endangered species.
At the heart of this strategy is paludiculture—the sustainable cultivation of wet peatlands. Through targeted rewetting and the productive use of these landscapes, harmful emissions are reduced while creating new economic opportunities for the region.
