Central Asian Biosphere Reserves included in UNESCO's Global Network

An interview on the importance of Biosphere Reserves for the country and the natural environment

EcoStan News, reporter of ecological news from Kazakhstan and Central Asia, spoke with Rustam Murzakhanov of the Michael Succow Foundation about the necessity of biosphere reserves for the country of Uzbekistan and the natural space itself, as well as the time-consuming and labour-intensive but absolutely worthwhile path to nomination. Murzakhanov is an expert on protected areas and biosphere reserves.

Recently, the impressive Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve in Uzbekistan, among others, became part of the UNESCO programme, which was reason enough for this interview. The Succow Foundation supported the preparation of the nomination document and accompanied the initiation of approaches for ecosystem-based land use and the conservation of ecosystems in the lower reaches of the Amudarya.

The result is an informative conversation in Russian about the importance of the Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve. At the same time, Rustam Murzakhanov gives an insight into the work of an internationally active foundation that is committed to the protection and preservation of biosphere reserves.
