Collaborative Strategies for Carbon Farming and Ecosystem Conservation in CEE

The project aims to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders at all levels to enhance the role of peatlands in carbon removal, farming, and storage. It focuses on Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, where peatlands — as key nature-based solutions — have so far received little attention. By supporting the development of national peatland strategies — currently existing in only ten countries across Europe, only one of which is in CEE — the project will provide a foundation for coordinating and scaling up peatland conservation, restoration, and sustainable use while contributing to overarching climate and biodiversity goals. 

Scientific and technical expertise will be offered to facilitate the implementation of the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation (CRCF) — specifically, regarding methodologies and standards for peatlands. Preliminary solutions will be tested locally in three CEE countries (i.e., Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia) and the results will be used to refine these approaches, build stakeholder capacities, and inform decision-makers. This process will help strengthen and promote the prospective European Peatlands Initiative.
