22. 3. 2012, 11:04 by VS
From March 9 to 15, a delegation from Azerbaijan visited Germany in the context of developing the new master study programme "Bioecology - biodiversity and nature conservation" at Baku State University. A trip to the Island of Ruegen provided an insight into the practical side of studying landscape ecology at Greifswald University. The guests from Azerbaijan visited the national park Jasmund, the biosphere reserve South-East Ruegen with its bronze age graves and enjoyed the view on the Island of Vilm. During the following two days, they established a dialogue with representatives of Greifswald University, visited the laboratory, talked to colleagues at the Institute for Botany and Landscape Ecology and were received by the Rector. In a number of workshops, contents and structure of the new study programme were discussed intensely with Michael Succow Foundation staff. In the end, a convincing and satisfactory curriculum was compiled. In the upcoming weeks, the focus in Baku and Greifswald is put on developing contents for individual modules and organisational implementation. In mid-April, the final workshop will take place in Baku and from fall, the first master students can profit from the new study programme.

Alisher Shukurov, head of the main department of forestry's international department at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan, takes part in the Klaus Toepfer Fellowship Programme from March 2012. Workshops at the International Academy for Nature Conservation, online modules and projects related to the participants’ work at their home institution make up a one-year training programme for future leaders in nature conservation from Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Before starting the programme, Alisher Shukurov shared experiences on nature conservation in Uzbekistan with experts from the University of Greifswald and the Michael Succow Foundation. He supports a strengthened partnership in the framework of CABNET and takes part in planning the network’s activities for 2012 in Greifswald. The project coordinated by the University of Greifswald fosters the protection of arid regions in Central Asia through capacity building and connecting young scientists. In 2011, Alisher Shukurov had been the co-organiser of a CABNET excursion of international students in Uzbekistan.
